The mineral industry of Africa includes the mining of various minerals; it produces relatively little of the industrial metals copper, lead, and zinc, but according to one estimate has as a percent of world reserves 40% of gold, 60% of cobalt, and 90% of the world's platinum group metals. In the cement industry the analysis is used to control weigh feeder belts and so eliminate the need for blending silos. It can be shown that the energy savings alone are more than sufficient to amortize the system in a year. In the mining industry all elements from Si to U are assayed in slurries. As many as 20 streams are assayed in 10 minutes.
